THE High Court has upheld a decision by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) to impound vehicles bought by 35 civil servants under the government rebate scheme.
Shepherd Gutsa and 34 others had dragged Zimra before High Court judge Justice Maxwell Takuva, who heard the case in his chambers.
The government workers were seeking a spoliatory relief against Zimra setting aside the notices of seizure that had been issued against them in respect of the vehicles they individually imported.
According to court papers, the government through the Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion ministry, introduced a scheme wherein qualifying members of the civil service are entitled to motor vehicle rebate on importation of vehicles.
Qualifying members applied for this scheme through their line ministries and approached Zimra officers for the processing of the rebate.
The applicants engaged agents to assist them with the rebate application process.
