The football fratenity has been plunged into mourning following the death of former Caps United defender Tapiwa Khumbuyani.
He was 41. Khumbuyani is survived by two children. He succumbed to liver cancer in his hometown, Gweru. Popularly known as Zheveti, Khumbuyani rose to stardom in the early 2000s when he joined Chapungu.
He went on to play for teams that include Hwange, Blue Rangers, Monomotapa, Caps United and Bantu Rovers. Khumbuyani also played for the now defunct How Mine, in career that lasted until 2019 when he retired.
Maxwell 'MaRhino' Dube, one of Khumbuyani's closest friends took to Facebook to pay tribute to the late footballer.
"It's with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of another football icon, Tapiwa Kumbuyani. Tapiwa, known for his remarkable contributions to Chapungu, Masvingo, Monomotapa, Bantu Rover, and Caps Utd, was not just a player but my dear friend, my roommate, and my fellow churchmate.
"Tapiwa's journey was marked by courage and resilience, even in the face of adversity. Despite battling liver cancer, he remained optimistic, and just last Wednesday, he spoke of his improving health on the video call we had. Sadly, he departed from us this afternoon(Sunday), leaving behind memories that will forever resonate within our football community.
"As I come to terms with this loss, let's honor Tapiwa's legacy by cherishing the moments we shared and the impact he made on and off the field.
"Rest in peace, Tapiwa, Jekiseni, Zheveti, Zhuwawo and Clay Bank Time as we used to call . Your spirit will continue to inspire us all. Little did I know that was our last video call.
