Police in Mashonaland West have launched an investigation following a spate of stocktheft cases where suspected syndicates slaughter stolen cattle and sell the meat in urban areas.

In a statement posted on X, police said they were investigating a case of stocktheft where unknown suspects stole 21 head of cattle at Plot 21, Batch Farm, Banket on Friday.

Nine carcases were found deboned. Twelve cattle were also stolen at a neighbouring farm.

“Meanwhile, 37 knives, heaps of stake meat, and 50kg empty bags were recovered at the scene.  Sauro Mudzimiri (32) has since been arrested in connection with the case,” police said.

Mashonaland West CCC proportional representative MP Mutsa Murombedzi said action must be taken to protect farmers.

“Stocktheft, particularly cattle rustling, has emerged as a significant threat to rural livelihoods in Zimbabwe,” Murombedzi said.
